Tree Treasures No. 26: My Grandmother’s 1940s Glass Ornament

When my grandmother passed away, I inherited this glass ornament from the 1940s. Back then, it was a simple ornament you could find at a five-and-dime like Woolworths. Nothing fancy. Nothing rare. But to me, it’s priceless.

This ornament represents years of Christmases spent with my grandma and grandpa. My grandpa passed away when I was only 8, but my grandpa lived on in all the traditions grandma held so dearly. I can still picture myself helping her decorate her tree, carefully placing each ornament while she watched and smiled.

I didn’t grow up living down the street from my grandparents, but my mom made sure we spent meaningful time together, especially during the holidays. Those moments mattered. They still do.

I handle this ornament like it’s made of crystal and memories – because it is. It’s one of the last tangible pieces of my grandmother’s Christmas that I still have. My grandma Lois was the very best grandmother, and every year when this ornament goes on the tree, she’s right there with me.
Do you have something passed down that may not mean much to anyone else, but means everything to you?
If you enjoy nostalgic holiday stories, I’m also sharing my Christmas memories in a new series called Christmas Stories Throughout the Years.
